My name is Botao Zhao, and I am a Master of Environmental Science student at Yale School of the Environment with a focus on environmental anthropology and human geography. My research focuses on the rapid socio-environmental transformations under modernity, particularly in regions once considered remote and underdeveloped "peripheries." I am strongly interested in studying trans-Himalayan dynamics including but not limited to landscape dynamics, geopiety, urban-rural relations, climate change, and mass migration. Currently, I am conducting research about modernity and indigenous livelihood transformation in the Sino-Tibetan frontier at the east edge of the Himalayas through the lens of commodity chains. Prior to my study at Yale, I held a bachelor's degree in urban planning from Southeast University, where I acquired fundamental knowledge and skills in design, spatial analysis, and cartography. In the long run, I aim to integrate spatial and environmental concerns from disciplines such as planning and geography with insightful social observations and reflections from anthropology. I am a native Mandarin speaker, fluent in English, and intermediate in Tibetan. Although I am a fanatic about hiking in the mountains and all kinds of outdoor sports, you would more often find me enjoying quiet moments, savoring tea, reading books, and drawing in the tranquility of my room.
