Sharif Islam, currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at MIT's Media Lab, brings a rich academic background to his work. Having earned a Ph.D. in Geospatial and Environmental Analysis from Virginia Tech, his research has primarily focused on understanding coastal erosion hazards and vulnerabilities in Bangladesh. Sharif's educational journey also includes dual master’s degrees in geography and applied statistics, complemented by a bachelor’s degree in environmental science and resource management.
His research endeavors extend beyond coastal erosion, encompassing various dimensions of environmental change and associated vulnerabilities. Employing a diverse array of methodologies such as remote sensing, geospatial modeling, social science, and statistical analysis, Sharif examines satellite and geospatial data to gain insights into environmental transformations and their impacts. His research agenda is deeply rooted in addressing climate and environmental justice issues, with a commitment to understanding the disproportionate effects of natural hazards and disasters. Through his ongoing efforts, Sharif strives to generate knowledge that can inform policies and interventions aimed at mitigating environmental risks and promoting sustainability on a global scale.
