The working group on nature-based solutions explored several dimensions of the design and implementation of such solutions for flood risk management. Natural and nature-based solutions for flood risk management include floodplain restoration, upper watershed management, or stormwater infiltration systems. They are part of a larger portfolio of solutions which includes non-structural measures or hard infrastructure (dams, etc.).
First, the group took part in an interactive training based on the Natural and Nature-Based Flood Management: A Green Guide (Flood Green Guide) developed by WWF
Second, some participants developed a couple hydrologic and hydraulic model for the Ping River basin, which was used to estimate the effect of upper watershed restoration interventions.
Finally, the participants worked on three products to be displayed in the Art & Science Fair: 1) a flood table, which aims to communicate on flood risk (both riverine and from surface runoff); 2) a series of fact sheets that explain the effect of nature-based solutions and adaptation measures in the context of Chiang Mai; and 3) a series of personas, fictional characters that help understand flood risk and mitigation solutions from various perspectives.
